Latest BIS Methods for Vitamin Determination in Food Matrices
Vitamins are essential micronutrients that play a crucial role in maintaining normal metabolism, growth, and overall health. Since the human body cannot synthesize most vitamins in adequate amounts, they must be obtained from dietary sources. Ensuring accurate vitamin quantification in foods is vital for nutritional labeling, dietary assessment, and regulatory compliance.
To strengthen India’s analytical capability in micronutrient estimation, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has recently released five revised Indian Standards for determining vitamins in diverse food matrices. These updates replace the decades-old microbiological and colorimetric assays with modern chromatographic techniques (HPLC and LC-MS/MS) that offer improved sensitivity, precision, and reproducibility.
The revised standards are the outcome of a collaborative R&D validation project led by CSIR–CFTRI, Mysuru, with participation from leading analytical laboratories across India — including Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd Thane.
