FSSAI tightens checks across the food supply chain: what it means for your business

India’s food regulator is widening its focus. A new report by brokerage firm Jefferies says food companies, restaurants and quick-commerce platforms should prepare for higher compliance costs and possible delays. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is now looking at the whole food chain, not just the final product.
Key highlights from the report
FSSAI is reported to have sent more than 150 notices to food, beverage, dairy and nutraceutical companies. The issues include misleading advertisements, unsupported claims and labelling errors.
Quick-commerce and e-commerce platforms are no longer seen as simple middlemen. They are increasingly treated as responsible partners in the food supply chain.
Restaurants, quick-service restaurant (QSR) chains, cloud kitchens and hotels face closer checks. These cover hygiene, calorie display, menu labelling and licences.
Proposed front-of-pack warning labels for foods high in sugar, salt and fat are also a major focus.
Other sectors under review include dairy, health supplements, alcoholic beverages and pan masala packaging. A proposal to stop analogue paneer from being sold as “paneer” could affect dairy brands.
What this means for food businesses
Jefferies notes that wider rules may affect supply chains, costs and day-to-day operations. Businesses that build strong audits, clear documentation and good internal controls now will be better placed when inspections come.
