India’s Organic Food Market to Reach $10.81 Billion by 2033

India’s organic food industry is undergoing a major transformation, projected to grow at a 20.13% CAGR and touch $10.81 billion by 2033. This growth is fueled by rising health awareness, demand for clean-label and sustainable foods, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) strong emphasis on labelling, certification, and consumer safety.

At the recently held Fi India and ProPak India trade shows, experts highlighted the role of innovation in food ingredients, packaging, and testing in shaping the future of the organic sector.

🔹 Role of FSSAI & CSIR – With 37 R&D labs across India, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) continues to drive advancements in food ingredients and packaging, while FSSAI has mandated stringent safety checks and labelling norms. These steps are placing greater responsibility on food businesses to ensure compliance and consumer trust.

🔹 Insights from Envirocare LabsDr. Nilesh Amritkar, Managing Director, Envirocare Labs, shared that while the overall Indian food market is valued at nearly $850 billion, organic remains a small but fast-growing segment. “Consumers are increasingly ready to pay a premium of 7–20% for healthier and sustainable products,” he noted. Despite challenges such as high transition costs, certification hurdles, and lower initial yields, India is steadily moving towards becoming a global organic powerhouse.

🔹 Industry Momentum – The organic and natural foods space is also supported by government initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, and consumer preference for plant-based, herbal, and nutraceutical products. This positions India’s food sector as one of the most resilient and fastest-growing in the world.
